After eight years (1980 to 1988) of training in different techniques and procedures, as well as in the evaluation and follow-up of patients from Europe (Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Italy) and USA (Chicago, New Jersey and Houston), the First Program of Bariatric Surgery in Argentina was launched in June, 1988. This Program includes severe, morbid and super obese patients.

At that time we chose one of the simplest techniques -that which causes a minimum of complications-, known as “Gastric Banding”. Other complex bariatric operations (Gastric bypass -GBP-, Biliopancreatic diversion -BPD-) are used according to the patient's needs.

We can outline three periods at the Obesity Surgery Centre CCO):

Patients who are selected for Bariatric Surgery must comply with an alimentary and behaviour educational plan, thus changing their eating behaviour, as well as the quality of the food they eat. Those who accept this situation, and even increase their caloric spending through physical exercise, with a strict and regular follow-up, in co-operation with dieticians, endocrinologists and psychologists, as well as plastic surgeons and PE instructors, will lead an optimal quality of life, reaching excellent results.

At the Obesity Surgery Centre (CCO) works a multidisciplinary team, which is highly qualified to give the patient the necessary support and follow-up, so as to reach a maximum of security and efficacy in the long term.

Dr. Carlos A. Casalnuovo (Curriculum Vitae) is the Director of the Obesity Surgery Centre, being a pioneer in Argentina and one of the most experienced Bariatric Surgeons in South America. Dr. Casalnuovo is the President and Founder of the Argentine Society for the Surgery of Obesity (SACO), as well as Asociated Professor and Chief of the Bariatric Surgery Section and Multidisciplinary Team at the Hospital de Clínicas of Buenos Aires University . He  is also a Regular Member  at the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American Society of Bariatric Surgery  (ASBS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) .
